Artist Bio: Adriana Velasquez Gutierrez (b.1978)
Mexican American | Los Angeles, California

In life –
Adriana Velasquez Gutierrez is a Mexican American artist and designer from Los Angeles, California. Her work reflects the duality of her upbringing—rooted in the culturally rich streets of South Central Los Angeles and the traditional, faith-driven heritage of Jalisco, Mexico. Drawing influence from both worlds, Adriana’s creative voice merges urban identity, religious symbolism, and contemporary storytelling.
In Traditional works of Art -
In her traditional works, Adriana reimagines modern cultural icons through the lens of historical reverence. Her portraits glorify figures of pop culture in heroic, almost saint-like compositions, fusing traditional and modern aesthetics. Blending mixed media techniques, she creates a dialogue between devotion, admiration, and modern identity—a flirty dance between Pop Art irreverence and Baroque grandeur. Her inspirations draw from masters such as Da Vinci, Velázquez, Warhol, and Basquiat, whose influences echo in the drama, color, and emotional narrative of her work.
In works of Design –
Through her design practice, Adriana extends fine art beyond gallery walls and into the streets. Under her creative moniker KOS, she transforms fashion and everyday objects into wearable canvases. Her hand-painted sneakers, garments, and products bring fine art’s detail and passion into accessible movement, making each piece a living expression of individuality and cultural pride.
In media –
Adriana’s artistry and creative collaborations have attracted partnerships with global brands and cultural icons. Her work has appeared across media platforms and projects for Nike, Adidas, EA Sports, Interscope Records, Microsoft, Universal Music Group, and the LA Sparks, among others. Her designs and portraits have been featured on Good Morning America, The Wendy Williams Show, and even at the Super Bowl. Her client list includes an array of A-list talent, such as Taboo (Black Eyed Peas), Wyclef Jean, Jabee, Tyreek Hill, Usher, Bruno Mars, and Too Short.
Artist Vision Statement: “Saints of Imperfection”
This body of work explores the sanctification of flawed brilliance — the way society transforms mortal lives into myth. The series features Cepillín, Vicente Fernández, Alexander McQueen, Nipsey Hussle, and Chalino Sánchez: five figures who belong to distinct worlds, yet are bound by their artistry, defiance, and deeply human contradictions. Each of these individuals transcended their origins through creativity, charisma, and authenticity, yet their stories are also marked by pain, controversy, and mortality.

This series of paintings explores the complex duality within iconic figures who embody both glory and vibrant portraiture and layered symbolism, I seek to challenge the myth of perfection in fame. Each painting becomes a shrine to contradiction — beauty interwoven with suffering, shadowed by loss, pride tempered by vulnerability. The works aim to reveal the humanity that exists behind their larger-than-life personas, reminding us that greatness often emerges not in spite of imperfection, but through it.

My goal is to create a visual dialogue between cultures, eras, and disciplines — spanning comedy, music, fashion, and resistance. The compositions honor their public legacies while reclaiming their personal truths, grounding them in emotional realism rather than worship.
Ultimately, “Saints of Imperfection” is about redemption, remembrance, and the uneasy harmony between pain and art — a mirror to how we glorify those who reflect our own fractured brilliance.

Each lived in a tension between reverence and rebellion. They are cultural “saints” not by ecclesiastical decree, but by the public’s emotional canonization — elevated through memory, music, laughter, and loss. In the Catholic faith, sainthood follows a sacred progression: a life is first deemed Venerable for its virtuous struggle; later Beatified as a symbol of divine favor; and, finally, Canonized — eternally enshrined. My work parallels this ritual of ascension, but through the secular devotion of fans and art.

Through powerful color, iconographic references, and layered texture, these portraits become contemporary altarpieces. The halo may flicker with imperfection, yet it glows with truth. Each figure — clown, singer, designer, outlaw, prophet — is both sinner and saint, burdened and beloved.
